Necessary Tools

Apple released the Apple Watch in late April of this year with mixed reviews. As one reviewer put it, "First-gen shortfalls make it feel more like a fashionable toy than a necessary tool."

In my experience, that is how many tech tools are perceived in the world of education. Today we have an exciting opportunity, dare I say responsibility, to ensure that devices such as iPads and laptops become necessary tools for learning rather than fashionable toys.

A good first step in this direction is to encourage staff and students to become collaborative content creators rather than individual consumers of the web. This blog is an attempt on my part to make this idea a reality.

So, to that end, I invite you to respond to one or all of the following questions: Why has Apple Watch been greeted with less than Apple-like enthusiasm? What connections can you make between the public's reception of the Apple Watch and educators' use of electronic devices in classrooms? What will transform these devices into necessary tools?
